If a survey among people who have never been to Europe asked which would be the city to visit first, no doubt the answer would be Paris. And if the survey inquired among those who had already visited the Old Continent, to which city they would like to return, Paris would assuredly appear among the first cities.

However, what does the City of Lights have? History, art, variety shows… It is a metropolis that encourages repeated traveling to it, since it will always be possible to make new, astonishing discoveries, a place that invites to sit down, watch and enjoy, from a sidewalk café table, from a bench in the Luxembourg gardens or from that viewpoint among the clouds, the main terrace of the Tour Eiffel. It is a city to appreciate all kinds of food, from the one offered by a luxury restaurant to the baguette bought in a street stand, at the edge of the river Seine, in between museum visits, or at the top of Montmartre hill, with the city at our feet. French culture, with Paris at the core, is very close to Argentina. It configured part of our cultural heritage and, no less significant, to recognize in the area of Parc Monceau the buildings which inspired our sumptuous residences or the elements of urban equipment such as streetlamps, monuments, fountains which we reproduced assures that we never feels like strangers in Paris.

This is an invitation addressed to people who visit the City of Lights for the first time as well as for those who want to return to it. A first tour orients and shows us the essential: Champs Elysées, Place de la Concorde, Tuileries, Notre Dame Cathedral and its surroundings, the Latin Quarter, Montmartre with its Sacred Heart Basilica. All of it is an exhortation to return with a pilgrim spirit and suggest other trips: to walk through the large boulevards with ample views, to appreciate the balanced space in squares like Place Vendome, to discover magical corners in Montmartre or Montparnasse neighbourhoods, where artists and writers lived who are still remembered in cabarets, bars and theatres.

And to appreciate also the booming Paris of the late XXth Century in La Défense area, the group of residences of the ancient nobility in the Marais district, which became museums, like the one that houses Pablo Picasso’s collection, or the Palace Carnavalet devoted to Paris history. Beyond the compelling Louvre or Musée d’Orsay, there are other exclusive museums like the one which exhibits the works of art of the sculptor Auguste Rodin or the medieval art museum housed in the old residence of the monks of Cluny, in the very center of the Latin Quarter.

The surroundings of Paris are full of reminiscences, as in the towns were famous artist lived and found inspiration for their creations: Auvers-sur-Oise keeps the memory of the painters Daubigny, Cézanne and Van Gogh who spent there the last days of his tormented life; Claude Monet resided in Giverny and painted his famous water lilies, the crowning achievement of the impressionist school. Another tour includes the city of Chartres, whose gothic cathedral is perhaps the most important since the French Middle Ages.

And, suggesting slightly more distant options, why not travel to Normandy? For instance, a tour to the stunning Mont Saint Michel; the seaside cities of Honfleur or Trouville which inspired the landscape gardeners from the middle of the XIXth and the beginning of the XXth Century. Bruges, the magic city of the canals can be visited in one day. Another option is a journey through Val de Loire visiting castles that recall the glory of French renaissance.

The possibilities are not exhausted with the previous. Whoever is in Paris receives a vital intensification caused by all its artwork. And Paris itself is a masterpiece, alive and at its peak. As such, we must feel it and marvel at it.
